The Samsung Galaxy Note was announced in 2011 at IFA Berlin (a major electronics and consumer trade show), and released from October onwards that year. The Android Galaxy Note was remarkable at the time for being large in size. It had a 5.3” display, which was unheard-of in a smartphone, and the touch screen was operated using a stylus or ‘S Pen’. The Note later acquired the distinction of being the first of a new breed of devices dubbed ‘phablets’ – so-called because it was mid-way in size between the mobile phones of that time, and a small tablet.
The Galaxy Note was available in white, pink and a shade of blue, and reviews were mixed at the time of release due to people being unfamiliar with large format smartphones. That phase soon passed, and in total 10 million of the devices were sold before it was replaced by the Galaxy Note 2 in 2012.
