The Samsung Galaxy S9, along with the Galaxy S9+ smartphones were revealed at the February 2018 Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona. Released for sale in the UK in March 2018, the Android Galaxy S9 replaced the Galaxy S8, and had many similar features to its predecessor. The glass back, curved sides, iris recognition technology and mouse, keyboard and docking station capabilities of the S8 were all retained in the S9. In fact, these features combined with the same aspect ratio and display size as the S8, meant that the S9 came in for some criticism at launch for the similarity between the form and function of the two models.
However, the Galaxy S9 did feature some improvements on the S8, and these included moving the fingerprint sensor to a different position to make it easier to use. The S8 had the sensor on the back of the device, which had caused some adverse comments at launch, whereas the Galaxy S9 had the sensor directly underneath the camera. The other improvements in the S9 over the S8 centred around the capabilities of the camera. Improvements included a super low-light mode, slow motion video functions and ‘AR Emoji’, which is the ability to produce emojis based on the user’s own image (similar to the iPhone X Animoji feature).
