Google (the company, not the search engine) was formed in 1996 by two Ph.D. students - Sergey Brin and Larry Page – while they were studying together at California’s Stanford University. The company headquarters, nicknamed the ‘Googleplex’, is in the USA at Mountain View, California. As well as operating what is widely regarded as the most frequently used search engine in the world, Google was also instrumental in establishing the Android operating system, and now sells a range of Android smartphones and tablets under the Nexus and Pixel brands.
Google Nexus and Google Pixel smartphones are designed, developed, marketed and supported by Google, but they don’t manufacture them – the handsets themselves are all made by a variety of major OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) which include LG, Huawei and HTC. The Google devices all have a boot loader (the small programme that facilitates fast start-up) which is unlockable, and allows the end user to customise their smartphone. Google phones are also often in the privileged position of being amongst the first recipients of any Android operating system updates.
