The sixth generation of Apple iPhone, the iPhone 5, was announced to the press and public on 12th September 2012, and released 9 days later. This was the first iPhone to be developed by incoming Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook, following the untimely death of Steve Jobs the previous year. Jobs had had a minimal amount of input into the new iPhone which was thinner, lighter and with a taller screen. The aluminium-bodied iPhone 5 was very different from previous models such as the steel and glass iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s. The iPhone 5 was also the first to replace the traditional 30-pin charging connector with the small, compact Lightning connector. This change led to some criticism, as it made the iPhone 5 incompatible with existing peripherals that had made use of the 30-pin connector.
The iPhone 5 was discontinued in 2013 after only 1 year in production (the shortest run of any iPhone), and replaced by the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.
