Motorola was founded in Illinois, USA as long ago as 1928. After a chequered history in which it was a major player in many massive innovations in the telecommunications field, and made enormous profits and losses along the way, the company was split up in 2011. The part of the company that was involved in mobile telephony was renamed Motorola Mobility, and was spun off, being bought by Google in 2012, and eventually by Chinese company Lenovo in 2014. By 2016, the company had dropped the ‘Motorola’ and ‘Lenovo’ branding on smartphones, and taken up the ‘Moto’ brand.
The main focus for the Moto branded Android smartphones was high-end models, fewer in number and lower in production volumes. Generally speaking, Motorola managed to maintain this focus, although they have released lower-end and lower cost smartphones in order to keep up with consumer expectations and changing requirements in order to remain profitable. Their latest smartphones have a focus on style and adaptability, with high quality peripherals and longer battery life.
